Archiving the ‘Inner City’: Brixton, memory and heritage

Archiving the 'Inner City': Brixton, memory and heritage is a one-day symposium at International House in Brixton aimed at professionals, academics and the public. It features three panel discussions.

The first asks 'How can we archive the city?' with speakers Sam Burgum (Birmingham City University), John Newman (Lambeth archives), Rhoda Boateng (Black Cultural Archives), London Unseen (Vanessa Ansa and/or Damali Ibreck)

The second, 'How is Brixton being remembered? with speakers Sireita Mullings-Lawrence (University of Bedfordshire), Nile Thomas (Historian, 81 Acts of Exuberant Defiance), Miranda Armstrong (Archiving the Inner City, University of York), Thor McIntyre-Burnie (Artist, Aswarm).

The third, 'What is preserved and what is lost?' with speakers Stella Dadzie (Educationalist, activist, historian), London Unseen (Vanessa Ansa and/or Damali Ibreck), Decolonising the Archive (speaker TBC), Binki Taylor (The Brixton Project)

In addition, there will be a photography exhibition featuring images of 'inner city' heritage from Brixton (Thabo Jaiyesimi), Paris (Eddy Anael) and Philadelphia (Monique Perry). There will also be a guided walk through Brixton's important memory sites. This event is connected to a Leverhulme Trust funded academic project at the University of York (see https://archiving-inner-city.org) and is co-hosted by The Brixton Project .
