"We shape our buildings thereafter they shape us" (Winston Churchill). This walking tour will offer an opportunity to look at some of the buildings within Central Brixton that provide hubs for the diverse communities within Lambeth. We will see homes built originally for ‘pious and aged’ women; hear about the tea dances at the Town Hall that helped to build cultural bridges; the ‘Barrier Block’ - a home or a prison? We will learn how a much-loved building was saved from demolition and is now part of the latest building in Brixton that is fast becoming a popular community asset.
Here are some of the buildings we will see on the tour:
• Lambeth Town Hall
• Almshouses
• Trinity Square
• Bon Marche
• Brixton Recreation Centre
• Brixton Village
• Carlton House
• Brixton House
• Southwyck House
This tour will be led by Angela Morgan a Lambeth Tour Guide.
