CULTURE IN CRISIS: ARCHITECTURE RESPONDS

06 June 2023

14:00 -15:30

This in-person event, hosted at the V&A, will explore different case studies and approaches to the (re)construction of architecture, within post-crisis environments.

As countries around the world are faced with the negative impacts caused by periods of instability, conflict, economic crisis, or the climate crisis, we are rethinking how we could - and should - live collectively within a built environment.

Looking at architecture within a broader context of lived experience, we will explore its ability to support recovery following crisis. Through this event we bring together the voices of architects working in Lebanon, Syria and Palestine, each embarked on projects which respond to the impacts of different crises on communities.

Speakers
• Shatha Safi, Director of Riwaq Centre for Architectural Conservation, Palestine
• Joy Kanaan, Executive Committee Member, Beirut Heritage Initiative, Beirut
• Mahmoud Zin Alabidin, Syrian Architect and Researcher, based at the Yilidiz Technical University of Architecture, Türkiye

This event is supported by the British Council.
