Golders Green Film Culture Walk

11 June 2023

14:00 -17:00

The Film Culture Walk is envisaged by the Golders Green Town Team (GGTT) hosting the walk as a knitting together of public locations in the NW11 area that help tell a story of our particular connections with film culture and the local built environment.

The walk is led by Searle Kochberg, a member of the GGTT. Searle has a PhD in documentary film, and has a professional background in film lecturing and filmmaking.

Film going is a collective experience. We go to the cinema to share something, often to discover and acknowledge what we have IN COMMON, what excites us, what challenges us, what makes us all feel part of something bigger. Golders Green was at one time a centre for the performing arts in London: 3 cinemas - Odeon, Ionic, ABC - and one major theatre, the Hippodrome. Only the Hippodrome building still exists, and no longer as a leading showcase for music hall, concerts (headquarters of BBC music 1969-2003), plays and film stars (Marlene Dietrich performed here in the 1960s). At the end-of-walk reception, film clips will be screened.

Over a coffee we invite those on the walk to consider what Golders Green might mean as a creative neighbourhood in the future. The GGTT hopes that this Film Culture walk will begin a community process of reengaging with film and performing arts as an experience we enjoy IN COMMON.
