Talk: Hybridity and Exchange – Japanese Fashion in Europe in the 1980s and 90s

22 June 2023

18:00 -19:30

An increased awareness of Japan’s economic power coincided with Japanese fashion becoming an even more desirable commodity in the West during the 1980s and architects from Europe working in Japan. Fashion designers like Rei Kawakubo, Issey Miyake and Yohji Yamamoto became fixtures on the Parisian catwalks. At the same time, Japanese street styles, subcultures and traditional clothes entered the western fashion vocabulary, and a significant impact for years to come.

This talk is part of the public programme of events related to the exhibition ‘Zaha’s Moonsoon: An Interior in Japan’ exploring Zaha Hadid’s iconic first interior project outside of the UK. The talk will be followed by a Q&A and end with a drinks reception.

Speaker: Claire Wilcox.
Convener: Jane Pavitt, Head of Research and Learning, ZHF
