Issi Nanabeyin: Under the Commons

‘Under the Commons’ is a large-scale photographic work by artist and architect Issi Nanabeyin. The work is part of ‘A Call to the Commons’, a public art and architecture project that builds on the LFA 2023 theme ‘In Common’, featuring 6 newly commissioned posters by artists, architects and designers installed on billboards, fly posters and digital screens across London.

Kaneshie Market is found in Accra, Ghana. The Ga-Adangbe term "Kane Shie Shie" means "under the lamp" referring to its beginnings as a night market which to date has become a trading centre. If one meanders through the untold turns and bends, populated with varied presences and displays of yams, beans, plantains, basins of dried fish or meat, products, cultures, systems of hierarchy, stall set-ups and movement. You would find clues to a common place fit for the urban landscape, one inhabited by the community to support the community and it’s social and economic needs.

Guests are invited to visit site locations throughout June and on the evening of 20th June we invite you to attend a panel event to debate some of the themes around the 6 artworks produced.
