As part of London Festival of Architecture, The Brixton Project is hosting a Community Roundtable examining legacies of Colonialism in our public realm with local historians, archivists, residents, and cultural organisations.
The conversation will be hosted by Binki Taylor from The Brixton Project and include speakers:
Bell Ribeiro-Addy MP,
Cllr Sonia Winifred,
Local historian Kelly Foster and Jon Newman, Lambeth Archives
The Brixton Project has been commissioned by Guy’s and St. Thomas’ Foundation to deliver community wide engagement around the re-interpretation of the statues of Thomas Guy and Robert Clayton. The process of re-interpreting the statues is on-going and work achieved to date can be viewed *here*.
The engagement journey presents the opportunity for communities in Lambeth and Southwark, hospital users and staff to influence the reinterpretation work around the statues of Guy and Clayton whilst positioning the Foundation’s wider art collection as a transformative community resource fostering open and expansive dialogue around the continued legacy of the transatlantic slave trade in our public realm and systems of health inequality disproportionately impacting Black communities across the UK.
