Sharing Open Space

This exhibition aims to promote what a truly inclusive public park might be to potential investors or stakeholders. It showcases the creativity of students in the MA Urban Design course at the School of Architecture and Cities, University of Westminster. During the semester-long module ‘Place and experience in design of urban spaces’ the students focused on defining inclusive and convivial open spaces that can promote physical, mental and social wellbeing reimagining the boundaries between private, public, and ecological. The work was developed in collaboration with local stakeholders (All Play Project/Sara Momtaz, an initiative to create a flagship play area at St Mary’s Churchyard W2 to address the needs and integration of children and adults with disabilities). By exploring issues of exclusion based on disability, age, gender, or cultural background, the students developed conceptual design proposals, reimagining underutilized open spaces as shared commons based on inclusivity and equity.

This is an exhibition of posters (incl. plans, 3D eye-level perspectives, photomontages, etc) and text explaining the rationale and design proposal. A student volunteer might be present to answer questions but this is not guaranteed.

The work was part of the Cross-Disciplinary Exchange initiative ‘Reimagining Westminster’ (2022-23).
