St Bartholomew’s Hospital: 900 years of care for the City and beyond

14 June 2023

19:00 -20:00

2023 is the 900th Anniversary of the founding of St Bartholomew’s Hospital. Established in 1123, Barts Hospital has cared for the sick of London on the same site for nine centuries. It has survived plague, politics, fire and war. It has seen everything from herbs and leeches to surgery with robots. This whistlestop tour will review some key characters, events, discoveries, medicine, architecture and even heraldry from Barts’ long history.

Dr Bruce Wilson is a clinician at St Bartholomew’s Hospital. Away from the world of anaesthesia and critical care medicine, his interests include history and heraldry. He is continuously fascinated by the unique institution that is Barts and he has been delighted to contribute to the 900th Anniversary projects.
