Some of London’s finest cultural and educational institutions line Strand south of Aldwych. This public realm project is designed to create generous space in common for them to use, connecting workers, students and visitors with art and performance and knowledge share.
It’s rare to be able to carve out new public realm in historic city centres, but SAVE Britain’s Heritage has described the transformation of Strand Aldwych as “the best and most enlightened example of good town planning since the creation of Covent Garden Piazza in the 1970s”.
The project demonstrates a radical shift for city streets. Without traffic, Strand will become a lively new destination and St Mary Le Strand Church will no longer be London’s most historic traffic island. There are beautiful gardens and lounging lawns. This guided tour is by Strand’s lead designer, Cannon Ivers of LDA Design.
