Thames Barrier Park

In this online photographic series, I present the Thames Barrier Park in London which is a great example of how sustainable design and planning can create a beautiful, functional space that benefits both people and the environment.

The park is situated at London's Royal Docks next to the iconic Thames Barrier. It was built in 2000 as part of the Thames Barrier flood defense system and refreshed in 2021. This area was previously derelict and contaminated, and its development has helped transform the local community by providing new opportunities for recreation and social interaction. The park has several ecological and sustainable benefits, among others: a variety of native plants, which not only provide habitat for local wildlife but also help improve air quality and reduce the urban heat island effect; renewable energy technologies, recycled furniture, sustainable drainage systems, etc. The park is also easily accessible by public transportation.

In today’s fast-growing cities, it is important to prioritize the creation of more green spaces like this, which help reduce the negative impacts of urbanization and contribute to a healthier, more sustainable future.
